Researchers in Hong Kong have recently published their findings on the connection between a part of the brain stem (pons) and the amygdala and its relationship to the severity of depression.

This research could help with diagnosing the severity of depression as well as provide insight in how to use therapeutic techniques to lower the overactive relationship between these two areas of the brain to help recover from depression.

This research also appears to provide insight into why people experience co-occurring depression and anxiety, as this connection seems to relate to processing both sadness and fear.
